Mazda’s i-Activ AWD features sensors that monitor road conditions 200 times per second. Designed to sense and respond to driving conditions, i-Activ enhances driver confidence without compromising driving pleasure.

Skyactiv engines offer greater fuel economy and low emissions while benefiting from a lightweight and responsive design. Every time a Skyactiv engine is started, an immediate connection between the vehicle and the driver is formed. With several engines to choose from, the Skyactiv lineup is engineered for performance.

i-Activ AWD constantly monitors the outside temperature, windshield wiper operation, the amount of torque required to turn the front wheels, and the engine load. This allows the system to detect if it is snowing or raining, and if the road is slippery as the driver climbs a hill or enters a turn. Ultimately, i-Activ AWD accurately helps prevent wheel spin.

i-Activ AWD is designed to deliver just the right amount of torque to the rear wheels to prevent slipping. In doing so, it provides the traction typical of a four-wheel-drive vehicle while minimizing fuel consumption.

The ideal distribution of torque between the front and rear wheels—the result of clever calculations performed 200 times per second by the innovative i-Activ AWD control module—ensures better responsiveness and a more confident drive.

The i-Activ AWD control module applies the necessary torque to the wheels to provide an exceptionally stable driving experience with better control during acceleration, cornering, braking, and potential slippage.

i-Activ AWD was designed to provide exceptional responsiveness while defying conventions regarding fuel efficiency. To combine the advantages of all-wheel drive with excellent fuel economy, we reduced the weight of system components and minimized friction losses.

Our engineers even studied how oil moves between gears to improve system efficiency.

When creating i-Activ AWD, our engineers carefully examined the design of every component and the materials used. This resulted in a 43% weight reduction compared to the previous generation system.
